Shampa Gopikrishna from Mumbai, India is the daughter of legendary Kathak exponent, the late Natraj Shri Gopikrishna.
She started her Indian classical dance training at the age of 4 under her father’s tutelage for Kathak and also trained in forms like Bharatanatyam with Guru Mahalingam Pillai and Odissi under Guru Shankar Behara. At the age of 23, she started her formal training in western dance styles like Contemporary, Modern, Jazz and Hip Hop at the Mumbai-based Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company (TLCDC). In her 8 years at TLCDC she choreographed company repertoire and three short contemporary productions.
Shampa is one of the few choreographers who has worked extensively across film, theatre and TV. She has choreographed for 13 films (Indian and International) and various TV commercials and music videos. She has also been a celebrity choreographer on the super-hit Dance show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” and was the only choreographer to win it twice! She worked behind the scenes for many other dance-based television shows as a technical choreographer working closely with the director and the technical crew to conceptualise and execute artistic pieces.
Shampa’s latest Commercial work has been the song “Rani Hindustani” from the Vidya Balan starrer “Shakuntala Devi” and Creative Choreography for the series “Songs of Faith” by Music Composer Amit Trivedi’s independent music label AT Azaad. Her latest stage work in India has been for musicals like Disney’s Aladdin and Devdas – The Musical. On the International dance scene, Shampa recently choreographed various Bollywood segments for Berlin- based dance company CONSTANZA MACRAS I DORKY PARK for their production “CHATSWORTH”.
Shampa also conducts workshops in Bollywood, Semi-Classical, Indo-Contemporary and Contemporary Movement all over the world.
